1 in 5 teens in Cyprus, 14-18 years old, use cannabis daily

The House Legal Affairs Committee heard Wednesday that a shocking 9% of young people between the ages of 14 and 18 use cannabis, and one in five use cannabis daily.

Dark statistics collected in a recent study also show a 2% increase in cannabis use by that age group compared to similar ones performed two years ago.

According to Philenews, this is what Christos Mina, head of the Cyprus National Addiction Bureau, also told the MP.

Mina also said the results are representative, as sewage from all districts is tested for drug use four times a year.

In addition to cannabis, he said stimulants such as cocaine and methamphetamine are also on the rise.

“At this point, it’s below average compared to other EU countries, but that’s not very reassuring,” he said.

He called for an increase in the authorities’ budget to develop two more programs. One is closed and the other is open for addicts.
