2024 VMA Best New Artist: Chapel Roan wins
The Hunger Games cannon rang out, we nominees were eliminated, and a winner was crowned: Chapel Roan was crowned Best New Artist at the VMAs 2024.
In her speech, Loan dedicated her win to “all the drag artists who have inspired me” and “the queer and trans people who drive pop music.” [and] “To all the gay people who dedicate my songs to who they love or who they hate,” Loan said. She also gave a special thank you to her fans and offered encouragement to her fellow Midwesterners. “And to all the Midwestern kids watching right now, I see you, I hear you, because I am one of you,” she said. “And don't let anyone tell you you can't be who you want to be.”
Her hits this year include “Hot to Go,” “Pink Pony Club” and “Good Luck Babe,” which she performed onstage at the show.
The 2024 nominees were Chapel Roan, Shaboozie, Teddy Swims, Tyra, Gracie Abrams, and Benson Boone. On the day of the ceremony, MTV announced that the category was narrowed down to Roan, Abrams, and Tyra. No offense to the talented artists, but isn't it a little weird that half the men in this category were eliminated so early? Yeah, a little.
Last year, Ice Spice beat fellow newcomers Glorilla and The Pink Panthers, but lost the Grammy to Victoria Monette, who also beat Noah Cahan and Jelly Roll. The Grammy rules have been a hot topic recently, as they allow Sabrina Carpenter to submit but not arguably “newcomer” Tate McRae (McRae has submitted three times, while Carpenter has only submitted twice). MTV's rules on what constitutes a “newcomer” are not well known or understood, but a win for Roan would at least seem to increase her chances of being nominated.
