Two helicopter crew members fighting a wildfire on the island of Samos, Greece, died when they collided with the sea, officials said Wednesday.

A Romanian and Greek liaison officer died in the crash, but two Moldovan citizens survived, a Coast Guard spokesman told The Associated Press.

A Soviet-era Mi-8 helicopter leased from Ukraine for firefighting took off from Samos at 4:39 pm and crashed at 5:55 pm.

Five vessels from the Coast Guard, two from the Army, two from the private sector, and nine vessels, including helicopters, participated in the rescue operation, a spokesman said.

In the woodlands of Samos near the Turkish coast, all 27 firefighters on the island and four planes and helicopters were fighting the flames. According to the fire department, the flames were fueled by strong winds.
