The henipavirus, commonly known as “Langya” henipavirus (LayV), has infected 35 people in eastern China’s Henan and Shandong provinces, according to official Chinese media on Tuesday.

The virus is likely transmitted from animals to humans and can cause kidney and liver failure, the Taipei Times said.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will soon establish standardized procedures for domestic laboratories to conduct genome sequencing and strengthen oversight, said Chuang Jen-hsiang, deputy director of the CDC.

Chuang also said Taiwanese labs will soon begin developing standardized methods for genome sequencing.

This virus belongs to a family of viruses that can kill three quarters of humans in extreme cases. However, none of the new cases are fatal, mostly mild, with patients experiencing flu-like symptoms.

There is currently no vaccination or treatment for Langya virus. Therefore, the main option is supportive care to treat zoonotic complications.
