A remote island boasts the highest employment rate in South Korea – Chosun Ilbo (English version) : Hankook Ilbo

Home to 9,000 souls as far away as the East Sea, rugged Ulleungdo boasts the highest employment rate in South Korea.
Ulleung posted an employment rate of 85% for the first half of the year, according to the National Statistics Office on Tuesday.
Previously, another rural community named Jeollabukdo Changsu held this distinction, but Ulleung took over in 2014. Except in 2016, squid fishing, which is the main source of paid employment, is available to him year-round, although the employment rate on the island has never been below 80%.
“This factor also applies to other islands where the proportion of jobs in agriculture and fishing is similar,” said an official from the Statistics Office. Seogwipo City on Jeju Island ranked first in terms of urban employment rate, while Ongjin in the port city of Incheon ranked first among local cities.
