AFC calls for bid to host Asian Cup and sets deadline June 30

kuala lumpur – The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has called for a bid to host the 2023 Asian Cup on Tuesday following China’s decision to waive its rights to the tournament.

China was scheduled to host the tournament in June and July next year, but as a result of China’s efforts to follow the Zero Corona policy, 24 team events have moved.

“(AFC) has issued an EoI invitation to all AFC Confederations (MAs) today to host the AFC Asian Cup 2023,” the AFC said in a statement.

“The deadline for interested MAs to submit EoI is … June 30, 2022.”

The selection process will be expedited and hosts will no longer be elected by the AFC Parliament.

Instead, the confederation manager defines the conditions and requirements of the bidding process to find alternative hosts and submit reports so that the AFC executive committee can make the final decision.

The Japan Football Association said it had an informal approach to the possibility of replacing China as a host country.

A South Korean FA official said he had a briefing after China relinquished hosting rights, but did not have enough time to hold a world-class tournament in the country. -agency
