Afghanistan: Guzarga Mosque Explosion in Herat, Authorities Report Dead and Injured

Herat, September 2nd: Taliban officials said an explosion erupted at a mosque in the western Afghan city of Herat on Friday. He reported deaths and injuries, but was unable to provide a detailed casualty count.

An explosion occurred at the Guzarga Mosque in Herat during Friday noon prayers. It is a highlight of Muslim religious week when places of worship are particularly crowded.

There was no immediate claim of liability. Previous mosque attacks have been claimed by the Islamic State militant group, which has carried out a series of attacks against Taliban targets as well as religious and ethnic minorities in Afghanistan. Followers of Sunni Islam, a popular trend, have gathered, followed by the Taliban. Lufthansa flight cancellations: Hundreds of flights grounded after pilots strike for better wages.

A year after the Taliban took over Afghanistan, the Islamic State group targeted Shiite Muslims specifically by suicide bombings of several mosques during Friday prayers. Adherents of Islamic State are also Sunnis and consider Shiites to be infidels.

Taliban official Abdul Nafi Thakor confirmed Friday’s explosion, saying casualties had occurred, but gave no further details. Thakor is the Interior Ministry spokesperson for the Taliban government in Afghanistan.
