AKEL Supports Andreas Mavroyiannis in 2023 Presidential Election

Former Cyprus negotiator Andreas Mavroyiannis was selected by AKEL as a candidate for the February 2023 presidential election.

After a two-day session, the left-wing opposition Politburo decided to support Mabroyanis to defeat the ruling right-wing DISY, which has been in power since 2013 with President Nicos Anastasiades.

AKEL’s Politburo has decided to support Mavroyiannis by selecting a former negotiator for Achilleas Demetriades, the son of the late Mayor of Nicosia, Lellos Demetriades, who is known for his progressive thinking on the Cyprus issue.

Human rights lawyer Demetriades has already announced his independent candidacy and is running a campaign focused on solving the Cyprus problem.

Majority vote will be submitted before AKEL Central committee For Saturday approval.

Talking to Astra Radio, which is affiliated with AKEL, Eleni Mavrou, a member of AKEL’s Politburo, confirmed that either Achilleas Demetriades or Andreas Mavroyiannis was chosen, but did not reveal anyone.

AKEL’s Politburo said it had chosen, but issued a statement that it did not say which one it chose.

“Regarding the party candidates, the Politburo discussed the choices between the two: Andreas Mavroyiannis and Achilleas Dimitriades.

“Both can represent the demand for gradual change in government and the majority of society’s expectations for a new beginning at all levels of our country,” AKEL announced.

The central committee is expected to approve the Mavroyiannis candidacy at a meeting scheduled for May 7 and 8 and refer to the grassroots organization for approval.

The final decision will be made at the party’s extraordinary meeting on June 5.

Born in 1956, Andreas Mavroyiannis has been involved in the Cyprus peace process full-time as a negotiator in Cyprus, Greece, under President Anastasiades since September 1, 2013.

Mavroyiannis also served under the late President of ADEmetris Christofias, former Executive Secretary of AKEL.
