An environmental group ready to sue the Norwegian state for a mining project

Natur og Ungdom and Naturvern forbundet warn that they are ready to sue the state to stop the dumping of mining waste at Førdefjorden.
In a letter to the Ministry of Climate and Environment on Thursday, environmental groups announced that they would proceed to sue the state.
In the letter, the organization states that the permit granted in 2015 did not include a plan to dispose of mining waste. In their view, this is a violation of EU regulations.
“There is an obvious procedural error. Therefore, we request the Ministry of the Environment to withdraw the discharge permit, but we are prepared for the fact that we may need to go to court,” said the leader of the Naturaln for bundlet. One Truls Gulowsen said.
Don’t worry
According to the Norwegian Broadcast (NRK), the Ministry of Climate and Environment has three weeks to respond to the organization. If their claims are not followed, the organization’s national committee will probably sue the state.
Kenneth Nakken Angedal, director of the mining company Nordic Mining, is not worried.
“We are confident that after a proper and long-term evaluation of many cases, we have been granted a license on an appropriate and legitimate basis,” he told NRK.
Mining waste
Nordic Mining wants to extract rutile from Engebøfjellet, north of Førdefjord in Naustdal, in the city of Sunnfjord, Western Norway.
Residual masses from rutile production deposited in Førdefjord at depths of more than 300 meters, causing strong protests from environmental movements.
The Marine Research Institute advises fjords not to dump mining waste.
Rutile is mainly used in the production of environmentally friendly pigments. The Sintef Research Foundation previously estimated that the project could provide 170 jobs directly related to production, which is estimated to last for 50 years.
