Antonov says he wants US banks to stop blocking money transfers to Russian diplomatic missions

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) – US Ambassador Anatoly Antonov on Thursday called the US decision to exempt Russia from sanctions for financial transfers necessary for diplomatic or consular assignments as a step in the right direction, saying US banks will no longer block transfers.

Earlier Thursday, the U.S. Treasury Department issued a general license allowing Americans to engage in transactions necessary for Russian diplomatic or consular service.

“Generally speaking, the US administration’s decision to lift financial restrictions on Russian diplomatic missions was slow, but we consider it a step in the right direction,” Antonov told a news conference.

“We expect banks to correctly recognize the signal and stop blocking transactions necessary to maintain the normal functioning of Russia’s foreign missions,” he said.

The ambassador added that it took a lot of effort to convince Washington that the sanctions were seriously damaging Russian diplomats around the world.
