The first new BVG subway train is currently being assembled for a test run in Berlin.
By the end of this year, manufacturer Stadler will deliver the first of a total of 24 vehicles in the new J / JK series to BVG. Urban Mobility Senator Betina Jarash informed herself on Monday (May 2, 2022) of production at the Stadler plant in Berlin-Pankow. “Given supply chain issues, and given the rising prices, this is an achievement,” Jarush said during his visit, referring to Stadler’s production schedule.
New subway train that runs regularly from 2024
After about a year of test runs, the new subway train will begin regular service in 2024. There are two sizes. Subway line Large profiles from U1 to U4 (JK series) and lines U5 to U9 (J series). By 2035 at the latest, the BVG fleet will receive a total of 1000 new Stadler subway cars. Jerash emphasized that an additional 500 cars would be possible if financial conditions permit. Of the 1000 vehicles, 376 have been ordered so far. According to Rolf Erfurt, Chief Operating Officer of BVG, they will be delivered by around 2025.
Old vehicles will no longer be usable
When normal service begins, BVG plans to phase out older vehicles, some of which have been in use for over 20 years. The acquisition of a new vehicle was preceded by years of proceedings. In March 2020, the Berlin Court of Appeals dismissed a complaint from manufacturer Alstom, which lost the bid competition for a € 1 billion contract.
