Matthew Leckie’s 60th-minute goal beat Australia’s favored Denmark 1-0 on Wednesday to advance to the last 16 in the World Cup.

Australia have advanced to the knockout stage for the first time since 2006 and have advanced from the group stage only twice.

Leckie took the pass just around the center circle, moved in and around the Danish defenders, and finally fired a left-footed shot that goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel dived to the left.

Australia scored 6 points in Group D.

The World Cup turned out to be a huge disappointment for Denmark after reaching the semi-finals at the 2020 European Championship. Although they drew 0-0 in their first match against Tunisia, they recovered by losing 2-1 against France.

The Danes attacked from the start against Australia but were unable to break through with the Socceroos.
