Brazil blames the United States for claiming to be on the Russian side

Brazil’s Foreign Ministry said it “regrets the tone of the White House spokesman’s statement” after accusing President Jair Bolsonaro of showing solidarity with Russia on the brink of the Ukrainian war.

Brazil has denounced US criticism of President Jair Bolsonaro’s recent trip to Russia after Washington accused the far-right leader of visiting Vladimir Putin as Ukraine’s crisis worsened.

Brazil’s Foreign Ministry said on Saturday that it “regrets the tone” in a Friday statement by White House spokesman Jen Psaki.

The United States tried to discourage Bolsonaro from visiting Russia, which had rallyed troops on the Ukrainian border, and triggered a US warning of an imminent aggression.

However, Brazilian leaders have made progress by meeting with his Russian counterpart on Wednesday, expressing “solidarity” with Brazil in Brazil.

A day later, the US State Department issued a rare accusation to Brazil, usually considered an ally.

“It wouldn’t be worse when the President of Brazil announced solidarity with Russia, just as Russian troops are preparing to launch an attack on Ukrainian cities.”

“Comments from the President without extrapolation”

Asked about Bolsonaro’s “solidarity” comments at the White House press conference on Friday, Psaki said: Their people are certainly not in line with global values.

“So I think Brazil may be on the other side of the world where the majority of the community stands,” she added.

Brazil’s Foreign Ministry argued, “I regret the tone of the White House spokesman’s remarks.”

The state “does not consider such extrapolation to the president’s comments to be constructive or useful.”

Inaugurated in 2019, Bolsonaro sought a close relationship with the United States under former President Donald Trump, Bolsonaro’s political role model.

But after Trump lost the White House to Joe Biden, the relationship cooled. Joe Biden has assigned Brazil to explode deforestation in the Amazon rainforest beneath Bolsonaro.
