Bureau Veritas (BV) said it was selected to carry out project certification for the Erebus Floating Wind Turbine in the Celtic Sea, Wales, England.
Located 44 km from the Pembrokeshire coastline at a maximum depth of 75 meters, the 100 MW Erebus project is expected to be fully operational by 2026 and supply enough power to power 93,000 households annually.
The Erebus project is the result of TotalEnergies’ partnership with SimplyBlue Group in a joint venture named Blue Gem Wind.
Principle Power Inc. designs floating platforms based on the latest generation of Windfloat® technology. This floater concept was “in principle approved” by BV in 2016.
The ballasted semi-submersible platform supports the latest generation of multi-megawatt wind turbine generators. The three-row platform is moored with a five-line cathedral mooring system and is equipped with a closed-loop ballast system to compensate for changes in average wind speed and direction.
BV provides independent verification and project certification in line with regulatory requirements. The scope of the evaluation includes all design phases, including site condition evaluation, design criteria evaluation, integrated load analysis, and detailed design evaluation of all components of the floating wind turbine, including inter-array cables.
To support design document reviews, BV provides independent analysis leveraging Opera, an integrated modeling tool that describes all components of floating assets or wind turbines, covering everything from mooring systems to blades. Opera is working on the complex physics of aerohydrocoupling and multibody interactions, managing the voyage and stationkeeping of floating structures, BV said.
The scope of BV certification will include all post-design stages from manufacturing to operation, including transportation and installation (T & I) and commissioning.
