Centuries-old caravanserai in southeastern Turkey has become a museum

The 800-year-old Ayyubid caravanserai in southeastern Sanliurfa, Turkey, will be transformed into a museum displaying different types of pepper seeds from around the world.

Completed restoration in the city’s Haran district in 2018, the Hanel Valor Caravanserai will function as the “Isot Museum”.

Cihat Koc, Governor of the Haran District, said the restoration work at Han el Barur was successfully completed.

According to the inscription at the entrance, Han El Valor was commissioned by Fusamedin Ali Bay in the Ayyubid dynasty 1219-1220.

This building is the only Ayyubid caravanserai that survived within the Anatolian border.

Project designer and scientific restoration consultant Assoc Dr Mustafa Guler said the restoration of the caravanserai was carried out according to its original form in the 12th century.

Most of the buildings that had been abandoned for a long time were destroyed, and it took about two years to restore them.
