Ceremony to commemorate the 77th anniversary of the liberation of the Theresienstadt Concentration

State officials, World War II veterans, and diplomats will attend a ceremony on Sunday to commemorate the 77th anniversary of the liberation of the Terezin ghetto. Among the attendees will be Senator Milosh Bistre, Vice-Chair Marketa Pekarova Adamova, and Defense Minister Jana Chernochova. Representatives of Russia and Belarus were not invited to the ceremony this year due to the war with Ukraine. Prime Minister Jan Rubineck of the Thereseen Memorial said the decision was not easy as most of the country was freed from the Red Army’s occupation of the Nazis.

Between 1940 and 1945, more than 150,000 people, most of them Jews, were detained in the front yard of the Nazi extermination camp, the Terezin ghetto. About 117,000 did not survive the war.
