Equinor, Shell, TotalEnergies, Gassco, and DNV have announced a new JIP kick-off to develop low-pressure solutions for ship CO2 transport. CETO (CO2 Efficient Transport via Ocean) JIP provides technical certification for low pressure vessel design, identifies solutions that increase CO2 transport while reducing associated risks, and supports the development of CCS opportunities. CETO is funded by project partners and GASSNOVA through the CLIMIT program and is expected to be completed in 2023.
Carbon capture and storage (CCS) will be an important technology for the world to reach the goals of the Paris-Glasgow agreement. Technology and industry are still emerging, but connecting capture sources to your facility or storage site can be a challenge, especially if you can’t choose a pipeline. As a result, CO2 carrier technology is required to safely transport large quantities at a commercially feasible cost. Today, most CO2 transport via ships is small and medium pressure (15 bar at -28ºC), limiting the possibility of scaling up to accommodate future growth of CCS.
A potential solution for transporting CO2 by ship on an industrial scale, safely and efficiently, is a low pressure transport system (about 7 bar at -49ºC). This will significantly increase tank capacity and cargo capacity and reduce shipping costs. However, the industry currently has little practical experience in transporting liquid CO2 (LCO2) under these conditions.
JIP aims to gain experience in low-voltage transportation and close important knowledge gaps by examining the basics of low-voltage CO2 transportation chains, including:
- Design of LCO2 vessel with low pressure tank and cargo handling system
- Material selection and testing
- Medium-scale testing and simulation of cargo handling
- Conditioning and liquefaction
- Testing the operation of LCO2 at low pressure
