Beijing: China’s drug regulator has approved the world’s first inhalable Covid-19 vaccine made by Tianjin-based manufacturer CanSino Biologics, boosting the company’s shares by 7% on Monday.
The National Medicines Agency has given the go-ahead to the vaccine for emergency use as a booster, the company said in a statement to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on Sunday.
Following the announcement, the company’s shares jumped 14% on Monday morning, closing 7.1% above its opening price.
The needleless vaccine is easier to store and administer than an intramuscular injection, so it is administered via a nebulizer, the company said.
“If the vaccine is subsequently purchased and used by relevant government agencies, the approval will have a positive impact on the company’s performance,” the statement added.
The company did not provide details on when the adenoviral vector vaccine will be generally available.
There are no publicly available validated or peer-reviewed data on efficacy of new vaccines.
Scientists in several countries, including Cuba, Canada and the United States, are also testing inhalable Covid-19 vaccines.
Since 2020, China has approved eight domestically manufactured injectable vaccines so far.
However, the country’s drug regulators have yet to approve foreign vaccines, including mRNA shots manufactured by Pfizer/BioNTech or Moderna, which have higher efficacy rates compared to other types of vaccines.
