China denies U.S. reports that nuclear weapons are growing rapidly

Beijing: China’s arms control official denied on Tuesday that his government was rapidly expanding its nuclear arsenal, but said he was taking steps to modernize its nuclear forces.

Hu Khong, director of the Arms Control Bureau of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said China is working to ensure that nuclear deterrence meets the minimum levels required for national defense.

First, let me say that this is not true of US officials’ allegations that China is dramatically expanding its nuclear capabilities, he said in a briefing in Beijing. The press conference was held the day after China, the United States, Russia, the United Kingdom and France issued a joint statement on the prevention of nuclear war and arms race.

The Pentagon said in a November report that China is expanding its nuclear force faster than previously predicted and could have more than 1,000 warheads by 2030. There are 3,750 nuclear weapons in the United States.
