China: Heavy rain hits the Pearl River basin

Beijing, June 20: China’s Ministry of Water Resources said heavy rains caused massive floods in the Pearl River basin.

Floods in major rivers in the Xi and North River basins occurred shortly after the rapids in the region urged the emergency response to be raised from Level IV to Level III to enhance flood control work, according to the Xinhua News Agency.

The ministry urged authorities to closely monitor flood conditions and stepped up flood control efforts in rain-struck reservoirs, small and medium-sized rivers and mountainous areas. Investment in China’s road and waterway infrastructure increased in the first five months..

Five working groups have been dispatched to Guangdong Province and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, and emergency response is maintained at Level III.

Given the expected heavy rainfall, floods can exceed alert levels in state-level rivers such as Guangxi, Guangdong, Hunan, Jiangxi, Anhui, and Zhejiang. Large-scale torrents occur in small and medium-sized rivers in the department.
