Citizenship chip makers are running out of silicon – a new defense order.strategy

Silicon wafers are one of the major components of microchip manufacturing. Russia has silicon deposits and silicon wafer production, but they are only suitable for special purpose techniques. Wafers for consumer electronics were purchased in the EU, but are currently banned from imports according to the fifth package of EU sanctions.

On April 8, the European Union adopted a fifth package of anti-Russian sanctions for the “special military operation” taking place in Ukraine. Apart from others, the package contained a ban on the import of raw materials needed to produce microchips containing silicon into Russia. The supply of equipment for manufacturing microchips and quantum electronics is also banned from import.

Kommersant reports that EU documents state that the goods banned from imports were selected based on whether they contributed to the increased military and technical potential of Russia. But obviously, EU actions are likely to affect only manufacturers of private products, not defense orders.

Russian chip manufacturers have confirmed that companies use imported silicon when building processors according to the 90 nm standard. “China remains the only option after the introduction of a total ban.”

The main consumer of silicon wafers for further chip production is Zelenograd’s Micron plant. For the past few years, the company has been trying to replace European materials with Chinese materials, according to Kommersant sources. Micron declined to comment.

There are silicon deposits in Russia, and some companies are engaged in their processing. Silicon processing companies perform tasks in various sectors of the economy.

“Every company is interested in wafers, not silicon itself as a raw material. For microelectronics, its suitability depends on the purity of the silicon, the quality of the surface treatment, and the concentration of defects. “Arseniy Brykin said. , Director of the Basis Consortium Developers and Manufacturers Association.

Although there are manufacturers of silicon wafers in Russia, they mainly offer the manufacture of microchips and discrete semiconductors for special purposes, and are managing directors of the Russian Association of Electronic Equipment Developers and Manufacturers. Ivan Pokrovsky explains. At the nm level, it is not suitable for technical requirements. “

As a result, only manufacturers of private products such as Micron and NM-Tech in the case of launch are subject to sanctions. Pokrovsky believes that in the near future it will be impossible to provide private production in Russian silicon, which will require considerable investment and time. In addition, sanctions have separated Russian chip makers from their factories in Taiwan, risking that hundreds of thousands of processors already paid simply not reach their customers.
