Discount retailer Big Lots plans to close 75 stores in California, according to new regulatory documents.
The 386-page filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission details the terms of the new loan with creditors. Two months ago, Big Lots announced it would close 150 stores, but that number has since grown to 315.
California has been hit hardest: the latest 75 store closures will leave the state with just 34 stores.
The Ohio-based discount retailer cited “macroeconomic challenges” such as the U.S. economy and inflation that are holding back customer spending. Sales fell nearly 10% in the first quarter. The company reported a net loss of $205 million for the quarter in its earnings release.
Big Lots, which operates about 1,389 stores across the U.S., is the latest retailer to close large numbers of stores amid declining sales.
All of 99 Cents Only's stores closed earlier this year, and many of California's vacant stores are being converted into Dollar General stores after parent company Dollar Tree bought the leases in a bankruptcy sale.
