Croatia remembers firefighters on Kornato tragedy anniversary

Tuesday marks the anniversary of the tragedy on Kornat Island, where 12 firefighters from Šibenik, Vodice and Tisno lost their lives.

On August 30, 2007, a fire broke out on Kornato Island, part of the Kornati National Park, and a team of 23 firefighters were dispatched in Mi-8 helicopters. Thirteen firefighters were stuck between his two hills without water and surrounded by a wall of fire.

Six people died at the scene and six later died from hospital burns.

Frane Lučić was the only survivor despite multiple injuries.

This was the largest loss of life in the history of Croatian firefighting.

Wreaths are laid and candles are lit today in honor of the firefighters who lost their lives.
