Croatia’s Perseid meteor shower this week – the best spots to see

The best spots to see the Perseid meteor shower this week in Croatia

Croatian stargazers, especially spots outside the main center, have a chance to catch one of the year’s brightest and most visible meteor showers this week.

In Croatia, ‘Suze Sv. Lovre’ (Tears of St. Lawrence) is considered one of the most spectacular celestial exhibits.

The Perseid meteor shower has been seen annually for at least 2,000 years. Typically up to 100 meteors fall per hour during peak hours.

For the best experience, the Croatian Astronomical Society suggests observing on the night of August 11th and early on August 12th. You can also see it on August 13th.

Best places to see the Perseid meteor shower in Croatia

Visibility is clear in less polluted areas, so anywhere outside of Croatia’s major cities offers some of the best views.

According to the Croatian Astronomical Society, if you are in Croatia, it is the best place to see the events held this year. The best time to see them is from 12:30 a.m. to dawn.

Instructions for observers:

• Do not look directly at the radiant point (the starting point of the meteor shower). You can see that the number of meteors is the lowest.

• No special equipment is required to observe meteors (telescopes, binoculars).

• Meteors are observed with the naked eye lying on the ground and in darkness it takes at least 30 minutes for the eyes to adjust to night conditions.

• Move as far away from lighting and light-polluted spaces as possible and into as dark a location as possible.

• You will need a mat, lounger, or sleeping bag on which you can lie down while observing.
