Czechs commemorate the destruction of Lidice 80 years ago

The Czech Republic commemorates the victims of the destruction of Lidice, which was destroyed on the ground by the Nazis, in a brutal revenge for the assassination of Governor Reinhard Heydrich of the Nazis on June 10, 1942. 173 men were shot dead and women and most children were transferred to internment camps. The 80th anniversary of the tragedy is marked at home and abroad as several towns and villages around the world have adopted the name Lidice in solidarity with their inhabitants.

The main commemorative event in Lidice will take place on Sunday, June 12th. Cardinal Dominik Duka celebrates the Mass for the victims of the slaughter at the foundation of St. Martin’s Church. The people move to the common tombs of the people of Lidice and place flowers and light candles.
