When Sadio Mané’s Senegal defeated Mohamed Salah’s Egypt in the first crown of the Africa Cup of Nations, Dakar exploded with joy with the last whistle.

Senegalese President Macky Sall said after the Lions won on Sunday night, “African champion. What a game! What a team! I did. Beautiful moments of football, beautiful moments of fellowship, and pride of the people. Hero. Congratulations! “

The president, who was planning to visit Comoros at the end of his trip to Egypt and Ethiopia, also canceled his last trip to welcome the victorious Lions who returned to Dakar on Monday at 1300 GMT, RTS TV said.

Dakar erupted when Liverpool star Manet scored a decisive penalty to give Senegal a shootout (4-2) victory after finishing the goalless final at the end of overtime.

People flocked to the street

Hundreds of supporters in Senegalese jerseys gathered and celebrated at the Independence Square near the presidential residence in the heart of Dakar.

The square vibrated by the sounds of car horns, vuvuzela, whistles, and firecrackers.

Flags were raised on buildings, cars and sidewalks, spreading the festive atmosphere throughout the capital.

Dozens of fans hugged each other in the post-PK bonfire at the giant African Renaissance Monument, which rises above the capital from a hill overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.

“I’m happy. It’s the best day of my life,” said 25-year-old Modou Ba, a car wash machine.

“We’ve been waiting for a long time. The cup is finally here. We really needed it,” said Seydou Nourou Diop, a 27-year-old accountant.

“We are very proud of our Lions, which is extraordinary,” said student Khadim Lo, 21,.

At the foot of the monument, supporters left the fan zone and arrived on the street. I stood on the car and mixed with the crowd coming out of the house to celebrate.

Moment of concern

Previously, in a tense shootout, anxious supporters wept and couldn’t see the screen. Manet missed the penalty at normal times, and Egyptian goalkeeper Mohamed Abou Gabal saved the shot.

“He must not miss a penalty. In the finals, a great player must not miss it. It is unacceptable,” yelled 24-year-old driver Pap Embai.

The spectators began to relax as two Egyptian shots unmarked.

They finally exploded with joy after the mane turned the last shot into a Senegalese African champion.
