Daugavpils city council may be sacked for failing to dismantle monument / article

At a press conference on Monday, VARAM reported on an action plan submitted by local authorities regarding the demolition of Soviet and Nazi glamorous items on Latvian territory. All municipalities submitted their plans except Daugavpils city.

The Ministry shall demand immediate action to ensure that local governments comply with the requirements of the law.

If the Chairman of the Daugavpils City Council and the City Council do not immediately cease their inaction in the performance of their duties as specified by law in accordance with the Law on Local Government, the Ministry will assess the responsibility of the Chairman of the City Council and the City Council. City Council for failure to comply with the law and the obligations specified therein.

In particular, the law provides, among other things, that city councils can be removed from office if they repeatedly fail to comply with or violate the law. The same goes for the city council president.

The ministry requested that the demolition schedule for the monument in Daugavpils be submitted within 20 days.
