Did Philadelphia's mayor mistakenly announce Kamala Harris as his running mate?
There's been a lot of speculation about who Kamala Harris will choose as her running mate in the 2024 presidential election, but a Pennsylvania public official caused confusion on Friday when he posted a video that appeared to announce Harris' running mate.
Philadelphia Mayor Sherrell Parker said in a social media post on Friday that she and many Philadelphia-area leaders are “proud” to endorse Kamala Harris for president.
The post also signaled that current Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro had joined the Democratic candidate in a video praising Harris from local union leaders and elected officials.
“Proud to have so many leaders from our region come back to support @KamalaHarris for President and @JoshShapiroPA for VP!” the post's caption read.
As of Saturday morning, Harris had not named a running mate. Shapiro is thought to be in the running along with other Democratic leaders, including Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Sen. Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.).
A representative for Mayor Sherrell Parker's campaign, speaking on condition of anonymity, told the Philadelphia Inquirer that the post was “not an announcement” but rather a show of “support for a longtime friend.” [she knows] I am one of the people being considered.”
Diane Ellis Marseglia, a Bucks County, Pennsylvania, county commissioner who appears in the video, told the Inquirer that she was “surprised” when she saw the post on Friday but thought it was “interesting” and agreed with the message of endorsing Shapiro for vice president.
