Tennis superstar Novak Djokovic was exempt from the Covid-19 vaccine because he tested positive for the virus in December, his lawyer said the Australian border guard put him in a detention center in Melbourne. He said in a submission to the court on Saturday three days later.
His lawyer said he was also demanding that the world’s number one move to a training facility for the Australian Open after the vaccination exemption for playing tournaments was denied.
“The date of the first positive Covid PCR test was recorded on December 16, 2021,” his lawyer said in a filing with a federal court seeking to overturn the cancellation of his Australian entry visa.
Djokovic, a frank vaccine skeptic, will hear the appeal in court on Monday.
Border guards broke Djokovic’s entry visa when Djokovic landed in Melbourne on Wednesday because he did not meet the country’s strict Covid-19 vaccine requirements.
Foreigners are still largely banned from traveling to Australia, and those who are admitted to the country must be fully vaccinated or medically exempt.
