In detail, Mohd Uzir said Malaysia’s domestic tourism performance was poor because domestic tourist spending fell 68%, while excursions fell 36.3%.

This is in line with the negative growth in which the number of domestic tourists and excursions recorded 67.8 percent and 40.2 percent, respectively.

In 2021, the number of domestic trips decreased by 50.7% to 72.4 million, but night trips decreased by 67.8% to 15.5 million, compared to 147 million in 2020. Travel decreased by 42.4% to 56.9 million.

In terms of spending, the survey found that shopping was the largest contributor to total spending with a 50.3% share, followed by food and beverages at 15.1% and automotive fuels at 11.1%.

Mohd Uzir said visiting relatives and friends contributed 24.2% in 2021, compared to 32% in 2020, significantly lower than the pre-pandemic year of 42.3% in 2019. rice field.

“This foreseen situation was due to travel restrictions between districts and states that made it impossible for people to visit relatives,” he said.

According to Mohd Uzir, domestic visitors with household incomes from RM5,001 to RM10,000 showed a significant increase in 2021 with the highest contribution of 23.3% to 30.4% in the pre-pandemic year. Domestic visitors travel with household income between RM1,001 and RM3,000, down 6.4% from 2019 to record 29.3%.

“In 2021, the most visited states by domestic visitors were Selangor with 10.2 million, Kuala Lumpur Union Territory and Sarawak with 9.1 million and 6.5 million, respectively,” he said.
