ANKARA (Sputnik) – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Saturday that Ankara is seeking to join the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

Erdogan said he attended the recent SCO summit as a special guest at the invitation of this year’s host, Uzbekistan.

“We certainly have a special relationship with Mr Shafkat. [Mirziyoyev, President of Uzbekistan]In this connection, he invited me and Mr. Ilham. [Aliyev, President of Azerbaijan] I am here as a special guest,” Erdogan said at a press conference on board the plane.

He said Ankara’s next step would be to move to the most advanced level of work, “perhaps high on the agenda under negotiations in its next host, India.”

“Whether or not we join is another matter, but this measure will take our relationship with these countries to a completely different level,” Erdogan said.

Erdogan answered in the affirmative when asked if he meant Turkey’s possible membership of the SCO. “Of course, this is our goal,” said the Turkish president.

Participants will meet in an extended format at the 22nd Shanghai Cooperation Organization State Council Summit (SCO-HSC) Summit in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. - Sputnik International, 1920, 16 September 2022
