Eye surgery canceled due to shortage of surgical supplies – Association

The Malta Ophthalmologists Association said in a statement on Friday that eye surgeries had been canceled due to a shortage of supplies.

The association said it had credible information from members working at Matterdei Hospital, saying that since May of this year, cataract surgeries have been regularly canceled for patients due to a shortage of consumables needed for the operation. .

The most common causes are lack of adequate intraocular lens power (insertion of the lens is a critical step in restoring a patient’s vision) or lack of surgical packs necessary to safely perform the procedure. .

The Maltese Ophthalmologists Association has urged hospital authorities to find long-term solutions rather than quick-fix short-term solutions. Also, hospital authorities need to resolve procurement issues. The best service to our patients that we have always provided over the years.
