About 400 million Norwegian krone paintings, sculptures and antiques have been confiscated by Finnish customs authorities at the border with Russia.

The Washington Post wrote that the seizures took place in Vaalimaa, southern Finland, in early April.

The work of art was lent to museums and galleries in Japan and Italy, and then on its way back to the Russian museum.

The seizure is due to the fact that the works of art are also covered by the EU sanctions imposed on Russia after the invasion of Ukraine.

Finnish Customs has begun an investigation and the Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs will bring this issue to the European Commission.
