The Czech Republic fully supported Finland and Sweden’s accession to NATO, and Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavsky told reporters in Berlin that he was attending a two-day informal meeting of NATO’s foreign ministers. Both Finland and Sweden have shown that Russia may abandon its neutral position and apply for NATO membership as a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. In connection with the deteriorating security situation, the Czech Foreign Minister said NATO’s current priority must be to protect the eastern members of the alliance. He said these countries have long warned of Russia’s security threats and feared that Russia could continue to expand its sphere of influence if Ukraine was defeated.
