Former Belarusian leader who helped dissolve the Soviet Union dies at the age of 87

The trio reached an agreement behind Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev and signed an agreement known as the Belovezh Accord, proclaiming that “the Soviet Union no longer exists.”

It was the last death secret for the Soviet Union, and Gorbachev resigned from his current position in less than three weeks.

The agreement also led to the creation of the Commonwealth of Independent States. This is a loose alliance that was later joined by other former Soviet republics.

A politically inexperienced physicist, Schshkevic was persuaded to run for the first People’s Deputies meeting in Belarus in 1989.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Shushkevic became the first independent leader of Belarus.

When Cheong Wa Dae was founded in 1994, he was eventually taken over by former collective farm chair Alexander Lukashenko. Lukashenko remains President of Belarus to this day.
