Gaza death toll from Israeli strikes continues to rise as tensions rise

The new Israeli strike comes just over a year after the 11-day war between Israel and Palestine in May 2021, killing at least 250 Palestinians in Gaza and 13 in Israel.

At least 29 people, including six children, have been killed in Israeli airstrikes on Gaza.

On Sunday, the Palestinian Ministry of Health announced the death toll at 32, but a further health ministry statement reduced the number to 29, including six children and four women.

The ministry said victims have been killed since Friday in an Israeli strike that injured 253 people.

Israeli officials have denied responsibility and say the children were killed by rockets fired at Israel by Palestinian fighter jets on Saturday.

In response, the Islamic Jihad Group said it fired rockets from Gaza into West Jerusalem on Sunday. Witnesses report hearing rocket sirens and explosions in Israeli communities.

In a statement, the group said it had “launched rockets” at the city, making it the first time West Jerusalem has been targeted in the latest round of violence.

growing tension

Israeli fighter jets launched air strikes on Gaza on Saturday, citing an “imminent threat of attack” by Islamic Jihad groups.

At least seven people, including children, were killed in one attack in Rafah, in southern Gaza, according to local authorities.

Meanwhile, Al-Quds Brigades said in a statement that Khaled Mansour, a senior leader of the Islamic Jihad group, was killed in the attack on Rafah.

The attack comes amid heightened tensions across the Palestinian territory since Israeli forces detained senior Islamic Jihadist leader Bassam al-Saadi in a raid in the occupied West Bank city of Jenin on Monday.

The Israeli military said on Sunday that 20 members of the Islamic Jihad group were arrested overnight by security forces in the occupied West Bank.
