George Heisler was officially approved by the European Parliament on Tuesday as a candidate for the European Court of Auditors (ECA), with 551 of the 629 members voting in favor.

This is the second step that Heisler had to experience. The final stage of this process will be June 2022, when the Council of the European Union will vote for the final round.

At today’s plenary session, a total of 629 members of the European Parliament voted, 551 in favor of Heisler’s nomination and 33 in opposition. A total of 45 votes were considered abstentions.

The reporter, MEP Angelica Windig, submitted a proposal to the plenary to appoint Heisler as an auditor. Hyzler will end its five-year term in September on behalf of Malta’s ECA appointment, Leo Brincat.

Hyzler, who is currently a member of the Standards for Public Life, was nominated by the Maltese Government as a member of the ECA in January this year. His ethical investigations over the past few years have led to the resignation of former Minister Justin Karana and former MP Secretary Russian Katja.

Hyzler passed the first phase of the European Court of Auditors about two weeks ago as 25 members of the European Parliament’s CONT committee approved his nomination.
