HMC Holds National Obesity Workshop-Doha News

Qatar is hosting the first national obesity workshop to raise awareness and find fundamental solutions and cures for obesity.

The Obesity and Metabolism Surgery Division of Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), together with the International Federation of Obesity, hosted the first ever national obesity workshop entitled “Issues and Strategies for Prevention and Treatment”.

The workshop was led by experts from HMC, the private sector and primary health care clinics, as well as Lebanese and British obesity experts from the Gulf countries. Leaders from the Ministry of Health (MoPH) and the World Obesity Federation (WOF) also participated in the workshop.

The main idea behind this workshop is to provoke extensive discussions on national guidelines for the proper management of obesity in children and adults. The challenges faced by healthcare professionals in dealing with obese patients and obesity complications were central to the discussion and discussion of the workshop.

The Ministry of Health is looking for ways to integrate treatment plans at all Qatar healthcare facilities and is aiming to set new guidelines for the treatment of obesity. HMC’s Head of Clinical Nutrition attended workshops, emphasizing the need for a healthy and balanced diet, minimizing desk-bound habits, changing unhealthy behavior, and daily. He emphasized the importance of sports and physical activity. In 2011, the country’s Amir Sheikh Tamim issued a decree dedicating the second Tuesday of February each year as National Sports Day. In this initiative, Qatar promotes a healthier lifestyle, improves people’s diet and their physical health.

This latest workshop is against the backdrop of an increasing number of obesity cases in the country, especially among children and adolescents. According to a recent study, 41.4% of Qatar’s population is obese. The high obesity rate is directly related to the high diabetes rate in the Gulf countries, which is currently around 17%.
