The cross-border attack is the latest in a long-running civil war in Yemen by the Shiite Houthi, following a series of Saudi-led military coalition air bombings in Sana’a, the capital of Yemen’s rebels.

The Yemeni war broke out in 2015, when the Iran-backed Houthis occupied Sana’a and most of the northern part of the country. A few months later, a US-backed Saudi-led coalition intervened to drive out the Houthi threat at the southern border and revive an internationally recognized government.

Since the beginning of the war, the Houthis has repeatedly launched drone attacks and missiles across national borders at Saudi Arabia’s airports, oil facilities and other facilities.

The Yemeni civil war killed about 130,000 people and caused the worst humanitarian disaster in the world.
