How should the high seas be protected? | | Environment

United Nations Member States are meeting to agree on an agreement to protect international waters.

Countries have worked for years to reach a global agreement on the protection of the high seas.

These are the world’s waters beyond the jurisdiction of any country. Two-thirds of the oceans are considered high seas, but only 1.2% are protected.

This means that most of the world’s marine life is under increasing threat from climate change, overfishing and shipping. United Nations member states in New York City aim to reach a legally binding treaty to protect 30% of the world’s oceans by 2030.

But what has stood in the way of agreement so far?
