How to Seek FEMA Assistance Following Hurricane Helene

Homeowners and renters in North Carolina, including those in 25 counties and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, who have experienced uninsured damage or losses due to Hurricane Helene may qualify for FEMA disaster assistance, according to a recent press release.

FEMA, or the Federal Emergency Management Agency, can assist with various needs such as displacement, temporary lodging, essential home repairs, personal property loss, and other disaster-related expenses. Residents in the following counties are eligible to apply: Alexander, Alleghany, Ashe, Avery, Buncombe, Burke, Caldwell, Catawba, Clay, Cleveland, Gaston, Haywood, Henderson, Jackson, Lincoln, Macon, Madison, McDowell, Mitchell, Polk, Rutherford, Transylvania, Watauga, Wilkes, and Yancey, as well as members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.

There are several methods to apply for assistance:

  • Online: Visit DisasterAssistance.gov
  • FEMA App: Download the app for easy access to information and assistance.
  • Phone: Call 800-621-3362 from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. ET daily. Assistance is available in most languages.

If using a relay service, such as Video Relay Service (VRS) or captioned telephone, be sure to provide FEMA with your contact number for that service.

According to the press release, FEMA’s disaster assistance now includes new benefits that offer flexible funding directly to survivors. The updated process has simplified application procedures and expanded eligibility, allowing more North Carolinians to access a broader range of assistance for their serious needs.

When applying, make sure you have the following information ready:

  • A current phone number where you can be reached
  • Your address at the time of the disaster and your current address
  • Your Social Security number
  • A general list of damages and losses
  • Banking information if you prefer direct deposit
  • If you have insurance, provide your policy number or the agent and/or company name.

If you have homeowners, renters, or flood insurance, it’s crucial to file a claim promptly, as FEMA cannot provide duplicate benefits for losses already covered by insurance. If your insurance doesn’t cover all your disaster-related expenses, you may still be eligible for federal assistance.
