Gazprom started supplying additional gas to Hungary on Friday morning – beyond the amount stipulated in the country’s long-term contract – Foreign Ministry Secretary of State Tamas Menzer said in a Facebook post on Saturday. .
Mentzer said the government had previously decided to procure an additional 700 million cubic meters of gas to secure Hungarian supplies as Europe faces an energy crisis caused by war and sanctions. A meeting with Foreign Minister Peter Siyart in Moscow paved the way for an agreement based on Gazprom starting to supply an additional amount of gas, he added.
In the initial stage, Gazprom will supply an additional 2.6 million cubic meters of gas daily through the TurkStream pipeline until the end of August, he said. Talks are underway about the pace of September deliveries, he added.
Menczer noted that Hungary’s gas storage capacity is over 32%, while the European Union’s average is less than 20%.
