WASHINGTON, Oct. 2 (Sputnik) – More than 70 deaths linked to Hurricane Ian have been recorded in Florida and North Carolina, NBC News reports, citing figures from state officials and its own tally. .

The death toll could exceed the 77 confirmed storm-related deaths NBC specified Saturday.

On Friday, US media reported that at least 45 suspected deaths from Hurricane Ian were reported in Florida.

Hurricane Ian made landfall in the US state of South Carolina on Friday after wreaking havoc in Florida on Wednesday and Thursday. It was then downgraded to a tropical storm and moved to south-central Virginia on Saturday.

Florida Emergency Management Director Kevin Guthrie said Friday that the state confirmed one death from Hurricane Ian and is investigating 20 unconfirmed deaths.

US President Joe Biden has declared a state of emergency in South Carolina and also said Hurricane Ian could become the worst storm in Florida history.
