Indian teacher accused of killing student for misspelling

Indian police are searching for a teacher accused of beating a low-caste student to death with a spelling mistake, police said Tuesday.

Nikhil Dohre was hit with a stick and kicked unconscious by his high school teacher earlier this month after he misspelled the word “social” on an exam, according to his father’s police complaint.
A 15-year-old boy died Monday of his injuries in a hospital in northern Uttar Pradesh, after the suspect fled the area.
“He is on the run, but we will arrest him soon,” police officer Mahendra Pratap Singh told AFP.
Dore was part of the Dalit community, one of the lowest tiers of India’s caste system, which has faced prejudice and discrimination for centuries.
Hundreds of people took to the streets on Monday after news of Dore’s death spread in the Auraiya district, the site of the attack.
The crowd demanded the teacher’s arrest before cremating the boy’s body and set the police car on fire.
About a dozen protesters were arrested, Singh said.
Police chief Chal Nigam told reporters, “After using force to quell the rioters, the situation quickly subsided.”
