International tourism increased by 138% in the first three months of this year

International tourist numbers surged in the first quarter, providing relief to the sector hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic and associated restrictions.

During the first three months of 2022, more than 5 million foreign tourists jumped into Mexico. This is an increase of 138.5% compared to the same period last year.

Turkish Tourism Minister Miguel reported on Sunday that 5.02 million foreign tourists arrived by plane between January and March. That’s just 7% below the number of arrivals in the first quarter of 2019.

More than three-quarters of visitors (77% of the total, or 3.88 million) came from three countries: the United States, Canada and Colombia.

Torruco said in a statement that 3.18 million Americans had jumped into the country during the first three months of this year. This is an increase of 101.2% compared to the same period in 2021.

Coastal resorts such as San Jose del Cabo were popular with American tourists.

More than 500,000 Canadians (about 511,000) jumped into Mexico in the first three months of this year, a whopping 1,446% increase compared to the first quarter of 2021.

Despite the radical first-quarter recovery, there are still many grounds to supplement to reach the pre-pandemic number of Canadian tourists. Colombians accounted for one-third of the number of foreign tourists landing at national airports between January and March. According to Torruco, just over 185,000 arrived, an increase of 217% compared to the first quarter of 2021.

This figure was 52% higher than in the first three months of 2019, when just under 122,000 Colombians arrived.

Torruco also reported that 3.82 million of the 5.02 million international tourists in the first quarter arrived via Cancun, Mexico City and Los Cabos airports.

The total number of international flights to these three airports accounted for 76% of the total, an increase of 134% compared to the first quarter of 2021. However, this number was 5% below the number just above 4 in the first quarter of 2019. A million foreigners have jumped into two major resort cities, the capital and the country.
