Iraqi men have been keeping lions at home for a year since they hired them when they were only 10 days old.
The big cat is called “Simpa” by its owner, Ahmed al-Hayari, who lives in Mosul.
Ahmed has bred many animals such as cats, dogs and birds since childhood, but lions are the wildest of all.
Sympa is a wild African lion who eats 10 kilograms of chicken daily in one meal.
Ahmed says it’s not a big deal to feed wild animals by hand and take care of him.
He is known to be the only resident of Mosul, who has a pet lion, so his friends and relatives are very interested in sympathizers, says Ahmed.
However, he adds, it can be more difficult in the coming years as sympathizers require special training to be domesticated.
Wildlife adoption is not widespread and is not legal in all countries, but it seems to be on the rise among the wealthy.
