Jerusalem, August 6: A 36-year-old man in northern Israel has died after being infected with a rare brain-eating amoeba, the Israeli Health Ministry said in a statement.

This type of amoeba is found in freshwater, puddles and other stagnant water sources, and investigations are underway into the possible exposure of fatalities, it noted.

The rare case was diagnosed at the Polyya Medical Center in Tiberias, a resort city in the northeastern part of the Sea of ​​Galilee, and reported to the ministry’s central laboratory.

Due to the rarity of this case, a clinical sample was sent to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for diagnostic confirmation.

In the early stages of PAM infection, which originates from the nose, symptoms may include severe headache, fever, nausea, and vomiting.

As the infection worsens, symptoms that appear 1 to 9 days after exposure may further develop into stiff neck, seizures, or hallucinations.
