Israel extends solitary confinement of Palestinian child prisoner Ahmad Manasura by six months – Middle East Monitor

The Beersheba District Court has extended the solitary confinement of Palestinian prisoner Ahmad Manasura, 20, aged 14 and suffering from serious mental health conditions, for six months until 21 November, he said. Attorney Khaled Zabarka said.

Attorneys Zabarka and Lea Zemer had asked the court to deny the Israeli authorities’ request to keep Manasra, who is serving a seven-and-a-half-year sentence, in isolation for another six months.

Zabarka condemned the court’s decision, saying Ahmad’s continued isolation was a grave violation of international law and inconsistent with international agreements stating that isolation for more than 15 days constitutes a crime against humanity. It added that it could be responsible for the continued isolation. Detention will be brought to the International Criminal Court in The Hague, the ICC.

Zabarka held Israeli authorities responsible for the deterioration of Ahmad’s mental state, particularly his overall well-being.

In 2015, Ahmad, then 13, and his 15-year-old cousin were accused of stabbing two Israelis in the occupied West Bank settlement of Pisgat Zeyev.

His cousin was shot dead at the scene, but while an Israeli crowd mocked him, Ahmad was hit by a car and suffered serious head injuries.

Video footage widely circulated in the media after his arrest shows the tortured young Ahmad being harshly treated and subjected to harsh interrogations without the presence of his parents or legal representatives.

After turning 14 in 2016, Ahmad was convicted of attempted murder and sentenced to 12 years in prison, although the law at the time the crime was allegedly committed in 2015 stated that no child under the age of 14 was allowed. imprisonment of minors was not permitted. .

Later, the sentence was reduced to nine and a half years. His mental state has reportedly deteriorated steadily, possibly due to the harsh conditions of his detention, repeated instances of solitary confinement and, more tragically, loneliness away from his family. .

Despite Ahmad’s deteriorating mental health, Israeli authorities have rejected a request by Ahmad’s lawyers for his early release.

A medical report found that Ahmad was suffering from schizophrenia, confirming the devastating effects of the harsh treatment he received at an early age.
