Israel Targets Syria’s Latakia and Causes Damage

Israeli missiles are targeting container yards in Syria’s Mediterranean port of Latakia.

Israel has said it is stepping up airstrikes on Syria and is targeting Iranian aid forces in the region. (Reuters)

A fire broke out in a container storage area at Latakia Port in Syria following an Israeli missile attack, Regime Media said.

The attack on Tuesday was Israel’s second attack in December, damaging hospital façade, some homes and stores.

“Israel’s” aggression “caused great materialistic damage, and the consequences are still being evaluated,” the Syrian Ministry of Defense said in a statement.

Israel is intensifying its attacks on what has been described as a target for Iran in Syria, and Tehran-backed troops, including Hezbollah in Lebanon, have past to support regime leader Bashar al-Assad in the Syrian civil war. Deployed for 10 years.

Live footage aired on Syrian state television showed flames and smoke in the container area.

“Around 3:21 am [0121GMT], Israeli enemies have launched aerial attacks with several missiles from the direction of the Mediterranean … targeting the container yard at the port of Latakia, “Syrian state news agency SANA quoted military sources.

“Firefighters are trying to put out the fire while the ambulance arrives at the scene,” the reporter said.

Latakia, a port in the Mediterranean, is Syria’s main commercial port.

Russia, Assad’s most powerful ally during the war, operates an air force base in Hmeimim, about 20 km (12 miles) from Latakia.
