Israeli President seeks to strengthen Gulf relations with a groundbreaking visit to the UAE

Israeli President Isaac Herzog will meet with top executives of Emirati, including Abu Dhabi’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan.

The representative president of Israel arrived in the United Arab Emirates on the first official visit by the head of state. This is the latest sign of deepening relations between the two countries as tensions grow in the region.

Just before Sunday’s takeoff, President Isaac Herzog said his visit aimed to bring “a blessing of peace and a message of peace to the entire region.”

His office said he would meet top officials, including the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan, the de facto leader of Emirati.

The President will also meet members of the UAE’s small but growing Jewish expatriate community.

He was also expected to visit Expo 2020, the World’s Fair in Dubai, where Israel hosted a series of events at its National Pavilion.

Relationship normalization

United Arab Emirates and Israel normalized relations in the fall of 2020. It is part of a series of US-mediated diplomatic agreements between Israel and Arab countries.

Arab countries have long avoided formal relations with Israel during decades of conflict with the Palestinians.

Iran’s common hostility and mutual fear of its nuclear program helped the UAE and Israel help formalize the relationship after years of secret relations.

Palestinian leaders have accused the normalization agreement as a betrayal of sovereign state reasons.

Herzog plays a predominantly ceremonial role as a national unity in the Israeli parliamentary system, in which the Prime Minister has the most power.

Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett made his first formula last month visit I went to the United Arab Emirates and talked with Mohammed bin Zayed about strengthening relations in many ways.
